Kangaroo vs. Art Car: BMW's Wild Ride at Bathurst | Museum's New Exhibit (2026)

A unique and controversial addition to the museum's collection!

The National Motor Racing Museum has acquired a truly one-of-a-kind exhibit - a piece of history, or should we say, a piece of art, from the #32 Team WRT BMW. This right-front bumper fragment, which was part of a car adorned with the vibrant colors of an Australian artist's vision, has become a museum piece in its own right. But here's where it gets interesting...

During the opening lap of the race, the BMW encountered a minor incident at Hell Corner. However, it was the unexpected encounter with a kangaroo that caused significant damage. The impact caused the car to shed parts, leading to a mechanical black flag pit stop and dropping the reigning winners off the lead lap.

And this is the part most people miss: the museum's curator, Brad Owen, saw an opportunity in this unexpected turn of events. With quick thinking and a keen eye for iconic moments, he secured this piece of the car, ensuring it would be preserved for future generations.

"I was behind the pit garage, enjoying a coffee, when the car returned," Owen recalled. "I knew this was a special moment - an Australian connection, a story to tell. So, I approached the mechanics, and they were kind enough to agree to display it."

Within 90 minutes, this piece of art-meets-racing history was hung on the museum's walls. Owen affirmed that this is the first time the museum has acquired an exhibit from an ongoing race.

The National Motor Racing Museum, located at Murray's Corner, is open until 4:30 pm today. Come and witness this controversial yet captivating addition to their collection.

What do you think? Is this a brilliant preservation of racing history or a controversial move? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
